Love One Another Capital Campaign 2021

Mother of Good Counsel, Milwaukee

Our Parish Roots:

On December 8th, 1925 Mother of Good Counsel was founded. Services were first held in the house chapel of the Salvatorian Monastery. Father Willibald Unger, S.D.S. served as the first pastor of MGC for 15 years, and during his tenure he established a school with the help of the Salvatorian Sisters. Past and present parents and children owe a profound debt of gratitude to the devoted service, self-sacrifice and patience of the Salvatorian Sisters who carried on the educational work of Mother of Good Counsel School. As many as 30 Sisters staffed the school at the time of its peak enrollment of 2,100 children at times. During this time, MGC School was the largest Catholic school not only in Wisconsin but also in the United States! Through dedication and service, the 6 “R’s”, Reading, ’Riting, ‘Rithmatic, Religion, Respect, and Responsibility that form the basis of the school’s legacy are still upheld.

As with every big endeavor, the parish has been nurtured and sustained over the years by many societies and organizations. The officers and members of these groups have shown their love for the parish in countless ways. While there is not space here to recount the history of these organizations, many still serve the parish and school community. In 2017 the parish began its Hispanic Ministry and in 2021 Archbishop Listecki named MGC as an official Hispanic Ministry site.

  PARISH OFFICE ROOF

The building adjacent to the church houses the rectory, Parish offices, our beautiful new chapel, meeting spaces, and serves other administrative needs. The roof is badly deteriorated and must be replaced to avoid significant long-term damage to the building infrastructure.

  PARKING LOT REPAVING

The portion of the parking lot between the church and the school receives a great deal of usage, including both foot and automobile traffic. Students use the area as a playground and parishioners park their cars there and walk into church or Paulik Hall. This parking lot needs to be repaved in order to eliminate dangerous conditions which put all users at risk.

  SCHOOL ROOF REPLACEMENT

In the past three years, we have replaced or repaired three different roofs at the school, including the roof over the gym. The two remaining roofs are 40 years old and in a state of disrepair, such that they must be replaced to avoid water or other damage to the school building. We would like to repair one roof as soon as possible. This project is essential to our ability to continue providing a quality and Catholic education to the school’s 200 students and their families who rely upon the school.
