Love One Another Capital Campaign 2021

Ss. Cyril & Methodius, Milwaukee

Our Parish Roots

As the population growth of Milwaukee’s Polish immigrants surged in the late nineteenth century, the need arose to establish new parishes to help relieve the overcrowding of the existing four Roman Catholic Polish parishes on Milwaukee’s South side. In April of 1893, 300 members of the southern geographic part of St. Hyacinth Parish met and unanimously voted to form a new parish under the name of SS Cyril & Methodius. The new church was consecrated by Archbishop Katzer on December 24, 1893 with serval thousand people in attendance both inside and outside of the church despite cold temperatures. In the first fifty years, the growth of the parish faithful, the education of their children and the devotion to their sacramental life flourished as noted by over 1,000 baptisms and 2,000 children in school annually where the faithful of future generations were formed. Polish immigrants and those of Polish decent now make up and present membership of the parish where both Polish and English are spoken for all liturgical and sacramental celebrations. The parish is served by the Society of Christ Fathers, a religious order with an active part in the apostolate of caring for the souls of Poles living outside the borders of Republic of Poland. Grateful for the faith and legacy of our ancestors, we look forward to building the faith and shaping the future of those to come.
