Love One Another Capital Campaign 2021

Ss. Cyril & Methodius, Sheboygan

Our Parish Roots

As immigration increased the early 1900s, the need for a church to gather became extremely urgent. In 1907, Father James Cherene brought promise of the beginnings of a new parish by answering an ad in a Slovenian newspaper. The cornerstone laying took place on Sunday, September 18th, 1910. It was on Palm Sunday, April 9, 1911, that Father Cheren offered Mass for the first time in the new church “The Church on the Hill.”
In 1921, upon advice of the Pastor and with the permission of the Archbishop, the parish purchased a plot of land on the extreme west side of the city to be used for a parish cemetery and picnic grounds. Renovations took place in 1952 and again in 1981, with the dedication of a new Chapel at the cemetery. In 2010, Ss. Cyril & Methodius celebrated their 100th Anniversary. Fr. Paul Fliss was assigned as Pastor in February of 2014. Almighty God has continued to bless our parish and it is in our fervent prayer that He will continue to bless Ss. Cyril & Methodius now and for future years.

  RENOVATIONS AND BUILDING REPAIRS

Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish is the first Slovenian Catholic community in the United States. Our lighted steeple on the top of the hill on New Jersey Avenue is one of the picturesque landmarks in Sheboygan. As a downtown Church we are an oasis among the surrounding businesses and concrete. As we enter the Love One Another Capital Campaign we want to maintain the quality of our intimate and historic building. Recently, the parishioners at Sunday Masses completed a survey listing some of the projects discussed by our Parish Council. Following the recommendations of parishioners we plan to upgrade building security, fix windows, improve both
interior and exterior lighting and steeple lighting, as well as provide for the continued upkeep and maintenance of our buildings and ministries.
